The Project: Improve the website architecture and organize the content
This client has a very successful business running, but saw a steady decline in Organic rankings and traffic over the last 6 months. This greatly reduced his revenue, and he sought our help to audit the cause of the traffic drop.

The large website had a number of issues:
– Thousands of crawled URL’s eating up the crawl budget
– AI & dynamically generated, low content
– Bad website structure and architecture, everything was linked up from the root.

Auditing Content and Website Structure
Fairly quickly we discovered low-quality content that most likely did not pass Google’s “helpful content” algorithm update.
The website’s overall structure was very disorganized and due to the size of it, important pages were hard to find for the crawlers.

Pre-Planning
Removing low-quality content, reviewing the internal linking helped to clean up the first phase.
Optimizing crawl budget to get more focus on important content.
Before going into an internal restructuring, it is utmost important to map out all the pages and prepare a 301 redirect map.

Implementing
Updating URL structures while implementing 301 redirects.
Correctly link up relevant content and link to parent pages to create ‘true’ content pillars to help the crawlers see the “tree” like structure of the website.
Reviewing and disavowing spam backlinks to increase the overall website quality.
The Results
Very quickly after starting to weed out bad content and improve the structure, we saw huge gains of the total number of ranking keywords, but even more improvements in the rankings in the top 20.
Many more pages started to rank for their own keywords.
It became very clear that we helped the crawlers find the good content much easier and the pillar structure created support for each topic within the pillar.

His traffic hovered around 11K, then dropped to 6K, due to Google’s Algorithms, and we got it back to 14K and counting!
Improved Rankings after Website Restructuring
Keyword Growth: The overall number of ranking keywords improved dramatically to levels that this website had never seen before.

Organic Traffic Increase: We noticed a huge improvement of Organic Traffic – based on rankings. Levels higher than ever seen before.

Branded Search: The improved website structure and the overall higher content quality resulted in a much higher volume of Branded Search. Again…highest ever for this website.

Purchases: We can clearly see the big dip in sales over the last 6 months of 2024. The biggest dip around November and December. So yes, we did recover in January & February, but March was a little down. We expect the better rankings and Branded search to continue boosting purchases over time.
